Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese baço, of uncertain origin, possibly from a Vulgar Latin *hepatium, from Ancient Greek ἡπάτιον (hēpátion), from ἧπαρ (hêpar, liver). Alternatively from Latin badius. Compare Spanish bazo.
