Etymology?

Where does the word urban come from? I think that I've heard it comes from the biblical city of Ur (in Mesopotamia, modern Iraq), but I'm not certain so I haven't added that. Anybody know? --75.15.139.210 00:23, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

See urbs#Latin. Equinox 20:41, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Other meanings

This word seems to be used in ways that are not described in the article. As far as I can gather, it is used to refer to youth culture, particularly black hip-hop type culture. For example, "urban street wear" would not include pin striped suits and bowler hats, but rather refer to clothing used by skateboarders and suchlike. I looked up the word here to gain clarification in my own mind, but found only its basic root meaning. EdX20 (talk) 20:36, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

I agree; there's also "urban music". I think our sense "characteristic of city life" is meant to cover this, but it really needs to say that it's young, streetwise city life, not the businessman. Equinox 20:41, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
