July 6 ,1932 ,St. Mary Parish, Louisiana ) is a retiredLouisiana politician and formerUnited States Representative fromLouisiana's 3rd congressional district .Caffery, the grandson of U.S. Senator
Donelson Caffery , grew up inFranklin, Louisiana . An Eagle Scout, he was selected in 1950 in a nationwide competition by the Boy Scouts of America to present a State of the Nation report in the White House to President Harry S. Truman. He graduated from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now theUniversity of Louisiana at Lafayette ) in 1955, having been awarded a music scholarship and having been chosen as coronet soloist with the SLI Stage Band. He received a law degree fromLouisiana State University in 1956, where he served as managing editor of the Louisiana Law Review. He practiced law inNew Iberia, Louisiana , and was an assistant district attorney there. From 1964-68, he was a member of theLouisiana House of Representatives .Caffery defeated fellow Democrat
Edwin E. Willis , a 20 yr. incumbent, and committee chairman, in the primary election in 1968, was elected without further opposition in the general election, and was reelected in 1970. He did not run for a third term in 1972, and returned to law practice in New Iberia.External links
