- Sandhurst Competition
The Sandhurst Military Skills Competition is a constantly evolving program that began in
1967 . Today, it is a one-day event conducted annually at the United States Military Academy West Point,New York . Sandhurst features nearly 425 cadets, with teams from the United States Military Academy West Point, theUnited States Naval Academy , theUnited States Air Force Academy , theUnited States Coast Guard Academy , Britain's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), Canada's Royal Military College and 6 university ROTC teams including the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets.Each USMA Cadet Company and Visiting Team selects a 9-member Squad (at least one member must be female) with two alternates. This squad is required to perform a series of military tasks along a 10 km route in less than 3 hours. Scores are determined by combining the points they earn by performing each military task along the route, with the points earned for completing the course within the 3-hour timeframe. Examples of traditional events include rapelling, building and crossing a one-rope bridge, rifle marksmanship, a raft paddle, 12' wall climb, and weapon handling skills.
