Real Time Tomographic Reflection: Phantoms for Calibration and Biopsy

Published: 29 October 2001 Publication History

Abstract

We aim to validate Real TimeTomographic Reflection (RTTR) as an imageguidance technique for needle biopsy. RTTRis a new method of in situ visualization, which merges the visual outer surface of apatient with a simultaneous ultrasound scanof the patient's interior using a half-silveredmirror. The ultrasound image is visuallymerged with the patient, along with theoperator's hands and the invasive tool in theoperator's natural field of view. Geometricrelationships are preserved in a singleenvironment, without the tool being restrictedto lie in the plane of the ultrasound slice. Thepresent experiment illustrates theeffectiveness of needle biopsy using RTTR ona phantom consisting of an olive embedded ina turkey breast and discusses severalprototypes of calibration phantoms.
