The first edition of this successful textbook on digital signal processing (DSP) appeared in 1988 [1]. At that time—given its practical strength, theoretical depth, and broad coverage—the book did not have much competition (with the possible exception of the DSP “bibles” of the mid-1970s). Some five years later, the second edition [2] dropped the topic of adaptive filtering, moving it to an edited book on advanced topics in DSP. T he competition had become stronger by then, but the second edition was also quite successful. This third edition is no longer than the second, although it has more pages (the format is slightly smaller). Gone this time are FORTRAN programs (adaptive filtering has not returned). The major change in this edition is that some chapters have been rearranged and reorganized. The Z-transform chapter has been moved to appear before the chapter on frequency analysis, which has itself been merged with the material on frequency domain characteristics. The chapter count is the same, though, since there is a new chapter on the fast Fourier transform algorithm (in the second edition this was a subsection of the discrete Fourier transform chapter). Subsections from the chapter on sampling and reconstruction of signals have also been moved to more appropriate places. One can ask if there is any advantage to switching to the third edition. The competition in this domain is far greater than before. In some respects, some other recent DSP textbooks are close to, if not better than, this work. Potential users will have to compare them based on their particular needs. It is hard to advise people who are used to the second edition to drop it for the new one. Even if the second edition is not arranged as well, many instructors using the second edition as a textbook have probably created their own paths through it, and it would be no surprise if those paths are close to that taken by the authors in producing the third edition. As with many other DSP books that are past their first editions, given the quality of the presentation here, if you need a varied and deep DSP course, you should seriously consider this third edition, and if you are already using the second edition and feel comfortable with it, you should stay with it. For the sake of completeness, I will summarize its contents. After an introduction giving a general view of signals, systems, discrete time processing, and conversions, the authors continue with a chapter on discrete time signals and systems. Chapter 3 is devoted to the Z-transform. Chapter 4, the longest in the book, deals with various aspects of the frequency analysis and characteristics of signals and systems. Chapter 5 presents the discrete Fourier transform (DFT). The efficient computation of the DFT is the subject of the next chapter. Along with the basic methods, split-radix approaches are presented in some detail. The implementation aspects of discrete time systems are treated in chapter 7. Chapter 8 is concerned with the design of digital filters. In the next chapter, important issues, such as sampling of bandpass signals and oversampling in analog/digital and digital/analog conversions, are discussed. Chapter 10 is an introduction to multirate processing. Linear prediction and optimum linear filters are the theme of chapter 11. The last chapter presents power spectrum estimation. Four appendices discuss, in turn, random signals and some associated measures, random number generators, tables of transition coefficients for linear-phase FIR, and a list of MATLAB functions useful for DSP.
