A Scientometric Review of Robotics in Elderly Care: Hotspots and Emerging Trends Analysis (2003-2023)

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study is to explore the current research status and hot issues of robotics application in the field of geriatric health, and to provide a theoretical basis for future research development in this field. Methods: The literature on robots in geriatric care in PubMed, Scops, Engineering Village (EI), CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library from 2003 to 2023 was searched and analyzed visually using VOSviewer and Citespace metric tools. Results: A total of 1,437 relevant publications were identified. Cavallo, F Professor was the most productive author with 24 articles. International Journal of Social Robotics Journal published the most research with 86 publications. Research related to the application of robotics in the geriatric population has continued to be hot in recent years. Its development stems from the joint efforts of several fields such as computer science, engineering, medicine, and mental health. Currently human-robot interaction, social robots, rehabilitation robots, elderly mental health and home care robots are research trends and hot spots. Conclusion: Future research is thought to be fruitful. While researchers should be aware of any hazards related to the use of robots in geriatric care, including the data divide, social isolation, privacy issues and ethical implications. These risks need to be carefully managed to ensure the responsible and beneficial integration of robotics in this area.
