UI Design for an iTV platform: an iterative approach

Published: 12 September 2018 Publication History

Abstract

This article presents graphic and interaction guidelines for User Interface (UI) design in the Interactive TV domain (iTV). Starting with a systematization of principles and good practices based on pervasive examples, namely the Google Material Design guidelines for Android TV and guidelines for Apple tvOS, the UI design of the UltraTV system followed an iterative design process. Several mockups and prototypes were assessed by experts and users, in laboratory tests and a field trial, as means to validate design and interaction solutions. The iteration of the prototype followed a user-centered design approach that started from a literature review on design principles and methodologies complemented by a survey on current industry trends in iTV to establish the guidelines. Those recommendations were applied to the development and assessment of increasing fidelity prototypes. The result is a fully functional validated iTV prototype that unifies several content sources with a personalized experience. The presented methodology proved to be effective in speeding up the workflow regarding the design and development process, with the potential to be replicated by other iTV products.
