Transmission facilities for computer communications

Published: 02 October 1992 Publication History

Abstract

This paper presents a brief introduction to architectures and technologies that probably will be used for wide-area communications. It starts with a review of the structure of today's network and some aspects of the digital transmission systems that dominate modem networks. Then the status and trends in wide-area transmission technology are addressed, first for the backbone network and then for the local access network. Local access refers to the transmission systems which connect customer premises to the nearestlocal exchange switch, and the backbone provides wide-area interconnection between local exchange switches.
