Abstract

In this paper we present a system for assisting the surgeon in planning and executing computer assisted interventions. The system named SCAS (Surgical Computer-based Assistance System) allows the surgeon to use multimodal data and innovative surgical tools for planning and executing of accurate and safe surgical procedures on human joints by arthroscopy.

The main innovative feature of SCAS is the possibility of transferring the planning data into the operating room in order to assist the surgeon during real surgical interventions.

The system process the pre-operative data and produce 3D models of knee joint structures. By means of a friendly human machine interface and based on these 3D models the surgeon can plan and simulate surgical procedures. During the intervention, the state of the real surgical procedure is monitored by tracking the surgical tools and the objects to be operated with a 3D motion monitoring system thus the user obtain a 3D spatial understanding of the surgical environment.

The system is able to monitor (or simulate) different kinds of data such as the depth of the tool inside the tissue and forces exerted at the tip of the surgical instrument.

The system has been implemented and tested in a laboratory environment. Preliminary results are presented.
