Abstract
The package TRIWAQ is used for simulation of flow and transport in shallow seas and estuaries. Parallelisation of TRIWAQ is needed to reduce the computing time that now puts a restriction to the accuracy of the simulations. Automatic parallelisation is unsuccessful for this package because the algorithms and data-structures that are used are inherently sequential.
This paper describes the approach that has been taken in parallelising TRIWAQ. It has been necessary to consider both the implementation and the abstract design of the software. This approach has been highly successful in keeping the complexity of the parallelisation effort manageable. Some performance results will demonstrate that parallelisation of TRIWAQ does allow faster computing. The results will also illustrate some of the issues for which the presented approach offers a solution.
