Abstract
This paper describes how research into Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text to Speech Synthesis (TTS) is being widely applied within the UK telephone network. It compares and contrasts telephony based speech technology with that used in non-telephony based applications and describes some of the special problems associated with integrating these into the existing telephone network. In particular, it highlights the main issues concerned with providing flexible, yet robust, multiple channel systems and shows how this has been achieved on a commercial speech platform. Finally, it describes how the platform has been used to deliver a number of advanced services including CallMinderTM and MeterLinkTM and how it is now being used to trial larger vocabulary applications.
