Remarkable Ecological Restoration Due to Integrated Socio-Economic Policies in the Loess Plateau

Abstract

Remarkable changes of vegetation cover in the Loess Plateau occurred in the latest 20 years. Land use/land cover (LULC) data of 1985, 1999 and 2009 were collected based on Landsat MSS, TM and MODIS remote sensing data. Results show that the widely implemented ecological restoration policies obtained a great success, achieving remarkable vegetation recovery and soil conservation in the Loess Plateau.

In the Chinese Loess Plateau, the goals of ecological restoration have been to conserve water and soil, to improve the ecological environment, and to develop local economies and increase the income of peasants. Integrated watershed management means that a comprehensive control system is formed through the rational arrangements of land use such as agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and side-line production; the layout of soil conservation measures such as agronomic measures, forest-grass measures and engineering measures and the combination of gully and slope control, based on the overall plan and at a watershed scale
