SCORM and Social Recommendation: A Web 2.0 Approach to E-learning

Recommender Systems for the Social Web

Abstract

This paper introduces the Educateca project, a Web 2.0 approach to e-learning. The project refactors SCORM, the de facto e-learning standard, to embrace the two main shifts in Web 2.0: the WOA (Web Oriented Architecture) and the social trends in user involvement. Thus, our proposal combines (i) a more dynamic strategy where brief pedagogical units are offered as services to be combined on-the-fly with (ii) a more active role of students, who become also content producers instead of being mere consumers. In this context, content recommendation plays an essential role to avoid overwhelming users with too much educative content that are not able to filter, asses and/or consume. Along this line, we introduce in this paper a new recommendation mechanism supported by the tag clouds which label both users and content.
