Abstract
Process-aware information systems (PAIS) are utilized in business and industry world-wide, and processes constitute a valuable knowledge asset for companies. While the enterprise landscape is subjected to a high rate of change, with developments such as globalization demanding new approaches and technologies like cloud computing, big data, mobile applications, or event processing, PAIS have not kept pace with these trends to adequately manage processes. This article gives an overview of the challenges and novel developments of various systems that have focused on addressing this area, specifically approaches that relate to the most recent category of PAIS we call Intelligent Process-Aware Information Systems (IPAIS).
