Historical Background
In her classic book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs said, “Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody” (Jacobs 1961). Indeed, her book was filled with examples of failures in city building when cities were not created by everybody, but by the few hands of power. And while her book does not provide scalable solutions to how cities may be created by everybody, these words continue to be prophetic. Traditional urban planning, for example, is supported by traditional forms of data collection and statistical analysis.
