Abstract
A semi-structured survey was conducted to investigate the differences between the young and elderly users’ human-computer interaction on smart home. Fifteen young users and fifteen elderly users participated in the study, and the questionnaires and interviews were analyzed via NVivo software. It shows that there are obvious different types of smart home used by the young and elderly respectively. Meanwhile, the young mainly learn to operate smart products by themselves, while the most elderly need help from others. Since the common interactive methods are touch screen and button control, both the young and the elderly prefer voice control. And the elderly still attach great importance to button control, for there are some deficiencies in voice control. When using smart products, both the young and the elderly value security and usability, and the former pay special attention to privacy. Both user groups have higher satisfaction with the smart home. In the human-computer interaction of smart home in the future, voice control should be given priority to improve the accuracy and intelligence of speech recognition. And the button control should be retained in design for the elderly.
