Abstract

The demand for electricity and power from fossil fuels has been increasing in recent decades. The Greenhouse gases generated by such processes significantly impact the atmosphere. In addition, the cost of electricity production from these sources is very high; therefore, it is not affordable in the long run. Such a situation can be solved by utilizing renewable energy sources. This article presents a case study that is implementing a solar parking lot to generate energy by using existing car parking roofs at United Arab Emirates University. The generated power shall be fed to a grid. We have used PVSyst software to simulate various factors, including the shadow effect, and select proper solar parking that guarantees maximum solar power generation. Two cases with the fixed and the tracked PV panels were analyzed, considering power generation and the corresponding economic evaluation. The results suggested that the tracking PV panel produced more power and had less payback time energy than the fixed one.
