Abstract

This paper explores how human-computer interaction (HCI) could support the nostalgic missing feelings over Long Distance Relationships (LDRs) with a functional prototype NostosMoon. The goal is to build a subtle connection for LDRs emotional communication as well as a deeper understanding of how to use nostalgia as a new way to approach interaction design. Nostalgia has different definitions other than remembrance, although it has long been treated as memory-related and a backward-looking topic. From social perspective, nostalgia has been proved to be beneficial for social connectedness and relationship bonding. The subtleness, wistfulness and genuineness in the emotion can serve as unique power for guiding interaction design between close relationships. Inspired by nostalgia theory, this paper introduces a NostosMoon system for emotional communication. The idea behind NostosMoon is opposite to current digital trends which are based on fast communication of huge volume of data. In NostosMoon, the moon, which is a metaphor of missing feelings, contains no other explicit information. In-the-wild user study has been conducted followed by qualitative interviews.
