Abstract

Multimedia services require enhanced call configurations, that cannot be seen by B-ISDN signaling as composing a single service instance. To solve this problem, the Cońcept of session has been introduced at the IN level to correlate different calls and connections that compose one service instance.

In this paper a description of the provision of Video On Demand service in an Integrated IN/B-ISDN scenario has been given and several advantage of this architecture have been envisaged.

First of all, the integration of IN and B-ISDN is done using a flexible approach because new IN information flows devoted to session handling have been defined such as to be independent from the B-ISDN signalling Capability Set used in the network nodes and terminals.

Another important argument is that an IN/B-ISDN platform can be used to provide a wide range of different services that share common facilities and it is not a VOD oriented solution.

The proposed model for VOD can be used even if only basic call/connection capabilities are available in the Control Plane. In fact, the service logic exploits a new signalling capability that allows the management of this complex service: it is the “Broadband Service Control Point (B-SCP) initiated call establishment and release”.

This capability reflects the general concept that is the Service Logic that governs the evolution of the service, in terms of network resources establishment or release.
