Abstract

This paper describes the basic concepts behind the Coupled Communications LIBrary (COCOLIB), which is being developed in the European Esprit project CISPAR [1]. The purpose of the library is to enable the coupling of industrial simulation codes on parallel computers. The industrial simulation codes themselves are parallel codes as well. The MPI-1 [2] and MPI-2 [3] message passing standard will be used for the implementation of COCOLIB because MPI provides facilities to keep the communication of COCOLIB separate from that of the codes it is linked with, and to keep the communication within the individual applications separate as well. We describe the main tasks of COCOLIB and the guidelines behind the development. We will explain our design ideas and conclude with a comparison between PVM MPI1 and MPI2 from our point of view.
