Abstract
Digital image processing is a fast developing field rapidly gaining importance through spreading of picture-oriented electronic media and the merging of computer and television technology. Digital image processing is used in image analysis, image transmission and image storage and retrieval. Typical application areas are telecommunication, medicine, remote sensing, and the natural sciences and agriculture.
Digital image processing is computationally demanding. Consequently there is a need for fast algorithms which efficiently implement image processing operations. In this 1996 review algorithms for common image transforms, image representations, and image data compression methods will be described. The principles underlying newer image coding techniques such as transform coding (JPEG) and multiresolution wavelet analysis will be outlined. Finally the role of image analysis in computer vision will be considered.
