Abstract

Providing content-based access to archives of historical watermarks involves a number of problems. This paper describes the further development and evaluation of SHREW, a shape-matching system for watermark images based on techniques developed for the ARTISAN trademark retrieval system. It also compares the effectiveness of different image preprocessing techniques required to enable the system to cope with electron radiographs of watermark images. Finally, it reports comparative studies of the relative effectiveness of different approaches to watermark image matching.
