# Receive and respond to alerts in Slack

**Connect your Slack workspace with ilert first**
Before you proceed, please make sure that a global admin has connected your Slack workspace with your ilert account (as described in our [integration for Slack guide](https://docs.ilert.com/chatops/slack))

## In ilert: Create Slack alert actions
1. Head to **Alert sources -> Alert actions -> Create new alert action**
2. Choose Slack (do **not** tick the "*Use webhook*" checkbox, if you wish to use the Slack bot)\\
3. Hit **Next** and choose your desired alert source and event types you wish to sync to Slack (we recommend "*Alert created, accepted, resolved and comment added*"), hit **Next** again.
4. Skip the conditional execution page, if you dont wish to add custom payload filters for now.
5. Give your alert action a name and choose your desired Slack channel that should be the target of the messages being published:\

6. Hit **Save** and you are taken to the edit view where you are free to make additional changes, hit **Save** again to get to the detail view of your newly created alert action.\\
7. Hit the **Test** button in the top right, and you should see a test message appear in your Slack channel:\

8. That is it, your done!

While the test message does not support it, all live alert messages that come into your channel bring additional actions in its context e.g. accept, resolve and many more.

### **FAQ**
### **Are updates to an alert published in Slack?**
Yes, the following updates for an alert are currently being published:
* **Escalations** : An alert is automatically assigned to another user.
* **Manual assignments** : An alert is assigned to someone manually.
* **Actions** : An alert is accepted or corrected.
* **Comments / Chat messages**
* **Merges:** If the alert is merged
### **Can I choose which updates to an alert are published in Slack?**
Yes, you can configure this in the alert source's Alert action settings.
### **Why am I not seeing my Slack channels in the ilert UI?**
*There are three requirements for channels to pop up in the alert action UI:*
**First**, ilert respects Slack's user permissions, this means that your ilert's user account email needs to match your Slack user's account email, otherwise you will not see any channels in the dropdown.

To enable Slack & ilert customers that cannot have the same account emails, or might be temporarily blocked to do so due to technical issues, ilert detects this and allows administrators to list channels where the Slack bot has been granted access to. Users or responders however will see empty channel lists and need to reach out to their administrators. We recommend keeping Slack and ilert account emails in sync, if kept in sync ilert enforces Slack channel permissions for any user role including administrators.

**Secondly**, your Slack user needs to have joined the Slack channel at the time of alert action creation (*you may leave afterwards*). To put blankly, this means the channel you want to add should appear under your channel section in Slack:
**Finally**, public channels will appear immediately; however - private channels will not. To have private channels appear in the UI, you will need to invite the ilert Slack bot into them (*after joining yourself, see second step*).
Mention the bot, to prompt Slack to invite you (*note: you need to send the message*)
Then click "**Add them**", to see the confirmation:
Now open the alert action UI, or if already on it, enter a new search term or refresh the page to reload the channels - you should see the channel now.
