[origin: EP0766930A1] The system consists of front and rear retaining members (60) which are fitted to the upper surface of each ski and designed to clamp the boot automatically in place when it is pressed down on the ski. At least one of the boots has an offset recess (75) in its toe or heel to engage with a matching catch (71) in the binding mechanism to ensure that the boot is fastened to the correct ski. The two boots and binding mechanisms can have matching recesses and catches which are offset on opposite sides of their centre lines. Both recesses and catches have the same shape and dimensions. Alternatively, the boots can have projections and the catches have recesses.
