HUMAN KIND
01:55
|
|||
Human kind can be hard to find
People who look at you right in the eyes
Try to memorize
The tell-tale signs...
Species
that carry
a spiritual debt
are hunched by the weight of those of their kind
Stranger, a strand in my DNA
So only strangers come my way
Atomized, heads spin round and round and round
I was born dead
The minutes and hours that lay ahead
A swarm of words, ideas, and images
Shifts in scale can trick the mind
Into thinking we’ll never run out of time
So we stay put, “you’ll be safe inside”
The action of shame, to motivate
Fear claims fear with no escape
Don’t make the same mistake
Oarsmen for a crooked ship
Clinging for life to the side of it
Atomized, life zooms in and out and in and out and

STATE OF THE ART
03:44
|
|||
Why can’t we just roll back the time?
Leave all sensations but the blur of the climb
Don’t stray—accelerate—no way to escape
Smash through the ceiling, increasing the pace
Speeds exceed, keep up with the times
Wind whips our face up here, the heights are sublime
Don’t rip the scales from my eyes, I don’t want to die
Forfeit your memories or get left behind
Planned obsolescence
The essence
Of a future with no living ties
What they call progress is the process of rejecting death,
The world keeps spinning faster, till it's out of breath
The nervous system, stripped for parts
The speed of information overtaking itself
Settle the brain—and settle the heart
The enemy of memory
The state of the art

FACES IN THE DARK
02:21
|
|||
In the windows of the hospital, faces in the dark
"Did you hear about the graves in central park?"
For six bucks an hour, a mask and some gloves,
A kid on Rikers Island lowers caskets from a truck...
Beneath the tunnels of the city
Even lower than the trains…
Dispossessed, and left for dead
Taking refuge from the rain
When we find out what we’re worth (not much)
Noses rubbed into the dirt (but so what?)
Lonely is the water that dries up in the earth
Another life gone, unobserved
All the shadows that wait their turn
To meet the death they’re told they’ve earned
Just accept it, it’s morals with no ethics
To think you get what you deserve
It’s never been a given, it’s the story we’re told
That some shoulders are always cold
That some people are meant to die (why?)
They’ll tell you it was just their time

UNDERLAND
02:27
|
|||
Down in the underland
The dead are said to live again
Tunnels wind and intersect
Old time made new again
Undercover, and perfectly kept
Sole to sole in identical step
Limestone cut by water and wind
A mirror image where the surface met
As above, so below
Are there places where the sun won’t go?
I’ve seen weapon stores, and sleeping places—
In the rocks
there are many faces
As above, so below
Secrets tend to find their way back home…
Forgotten graves, and stones that talk
Unaccustomed to the daily shock…
Human remains and nuclear waste—
See them mingle in a “private” place
As above, so below
Pull the pin, close your eyes and throw...
Katabasis, the last descent
Between the trenches and the ocean vents
But even lower, in the darkest depths—
The earth conceals our deep regrets
As above, so below...

DAY 49
02:50
|
|||
Life’s end
Day 49
I’ve left space and undertaken time
Looking down, wondering why
I insist on another try…
A thousand births
A thousand deaths
A thousand more
I'll never rest!
Made of earth
Return to it
The blessing of impermanence
It slowly dawns before my eyes
How many tears I’ve left to cry
Teeth to cut, and trails to fly
Gonna lose it all this time
To take a birth
with human kind
I nail myself, to space and time
A cloud of souls, form a living line
And follow the path the dead define

MILLENARIAN MAN
02:20
|
|||
Another faceless Millenarian Man
Singing songs of an imagined past
He’ll wage an endless war (what for?)
To make a world he understands
Speed the future with a violent plan
To scrub away the margins and the underclass
Poison the water, annihilate the land
Give it back to the living dead
Another violent Millenarian Man,
Seeking shelter from the world at hand
Led to battle, like moths to the candle
By group hallucinations of a “simple” past
Looking backwards, what do you see?
Delusions of tranquility
An ark that turned to glass, and smashed
Where lightning leapt to strike the sand

SIMPLE CURE
02:56
|
|||
There’s a simple cure for troubled dreams–memories, they come and go
But history reveals itself, like weeds that push up through the road
So why am I so busy chasing seeds I know I’ll never sow?
(Don’t think twice, go in blind, close your eyes and watch them grow)
They’ll ask us, did you work alone, you say yes and I’ll say no.

JERUSALEM SYNDROME
02:04
|
|||
Settle up, settle down, but settle the score
Why settle for less when you can settle for more?
Suiting up for the final push
“A bird in the hand, well that’s two in the bush”
With every provocation we’re evicting the past
Camp alpha, a little city in an oil trance
Rewrite history by the seat of our pants
Another occupation of the holy land
Jerusalem syndrome—got the better of you
Blackwater hired guns have come to see it through
Protection, an investment that is sold and bought
Memory and occupation, tied up in a knot
Feed the compulsion to plant the flag, install a prop
Helipads, built on top of artifacts
The desert littered with extended mags
A regional psychosis, is there something in the air?
Are those floodlights or a warning flare?
Sacred sites, toppled in a night
And all the sudden they were never there

BEWARE
05:03
|
|||
Don’t entertain
the end of days—
The plastic ruins,
they look so strange
The sky goes dark
But holds the rain (any day now, any day)
Some would say
That time will tell
But refuse to hear
The warning bells
The splash of oil
In our wishing wells
Draw out the heart
And toss the shell (No one heard it when the last tree fell )
When the coast looks clear, beware
They’ll say there’s no one left to care
To hear the call that comes on air,
Saying loud and clear, beware...
The rocks don’t fall
They shake with fear
Playtime for
The pioneers
Rename the world
Snuff the candle of the past
How far in the future
Will the shadow cast?
----------------
Hear the robin’s song
Save our ship there’s something wrong
They’ll fill what’s empty, by force of entry
Pray for rain it won’t be long
Dredge the earth, for deeper holes
Suss the mines for the darkest coals
In the end, what’s left unsaid
Will haunt us more than what was told
Hope and time
Two stars in decline,
in the end...
what was said…
In the end...
