Description
Manuka Tree, Manuka Myrtle
Famous as the nectar source for the delicious and anti-bacterial Manuka Honey! These trees are native to Tasmania and New Zealand and are often referred to as the New Zealand Tea Tree not to be confused with the distinctly different Tea tree we use for essential oil. Manuka is more of a shrubby tree with small but pretty flowers much favored by pollinators. It is very drought tolerant and thrives in a hot climate. The indigenous Maori people of New Zealand had many uses for this versatile tree medicinally as well as using the wood for paddles, weapons, house building and as water containers and roofing! Not Commonly found in the US, this hardy shrub/tree deserves more attention and planting. It is a great addition for that hot, sunny spot that is too much for other plants! Tender perennial to about 10 feet. Hardiness Zones 9-11
