Albert Günther creates the Zoological Record, a revolutionary database of animal biology
Zoologist Albert Günther is the original editor of the Zoological Record. This early database revolutionized life sciences by serving as a key driver in the advancement of systematic zoology and biodiversity research. Since its origination, the archive has recorded nearly 1.2 million species and influenced the work of environmental researchers including those studying global warming, energy and conservation. Today, the Zoological Record index is accessible on the Web of Science platform and integrated with other Clarivate data and tools.
Henry C. Thomson lays the foundation for the trademark searching industry and CompuMark
Inventor and patent agent Henry C. Thomson begins working on a system of catalogued trademarks to facilitate searching. Thomson built a reliable, all-inclusive, cross-reference file of U.S.-registered trademarks, effectively creating the trademark-searching industry. Eventually, Thomson’s company merged with the GEVERS Group’s Compu-Mark to form CompuMark.
Eugene Power transforms academic information solutions with the forerunner of ProQuest
Eugene Power founds University Microfilms, Inc (UMI), the business we now know as ProQuest, with the goal to help preserve and share the world’s knowledge. He developed innovative uses of new technologies that fundamentally changed the way libraries and researchers could access and use information.
Monty Hyams founds a patent information giant from his home, Derwent
Monty Hyams begins selling patent bulletins from his home, Derwent. His modest operation eventually grew into a patent information giant. Hyams is also credited with creating the first patent information retrieval service to help inventors save time and money by quickly determining the patentability of their inventions. This service was the precursor to today’s Derwent World Patents Index, which is backed by a team of 900+ editors who analyze, abstract and index nearly 90,000 new patent publications every week.
Eugene Garfield starts building a foundation for information science
Eugene Garfield invents citation indexing and searching as a new method for disseminating the world’s scientific and scholarly research literature, eventually leading to the launch of Web of Science. By organizing information through a network of citation connections, Garfield anticipated web hyperlinking and the Google Search algorithm by three decades. In 1960, Garfield went on to found The Institute for Scientific Information, which still operates as a global think tank fostering the scientometric community through research and collaboration.
Bernard Olcott starts a business for patent renewals, laying the groundwork for CPA Global
Global patent attorney, Bernard Olcott taught himself computer programming by renting time through a technology company during a period when computers were a new frontier. He went on to build a successful patent renewals business, marketing it as a modern, computerized clerical operation. Eventually, Olcott’s firm partnered with one of the world’s premier and oldest patent law firms to create the world’s largest patent renewal agency. This agency would become Computer Patent Annuities (CPA Global) and make up the patent maintenance services we offer today.
