Fossil Creek and Bob Bear Trail (formerly Fossil Springs) are not the same! Both waterfalls are part of the Fossil Springs wilderness and are in the same area, but adventuring to each of these waterfalls requires a different route! Fossil Springs is now called Bob Bear Trail, and this is a 9 mile hike (roundtrip) to access the waterfall that includes the “toilet bowl” and the swimmable cave “grotto”. This trailhead is accessed via the town of Strawberry. Remember, “springs” = Strawberry This hike is very hot during the summer, and most of the hike into/out of the canyon is exposed. These are both fantastic hikes to do during the fall and spring when the weather is enjoyable :) Make sure to bring plenty of water + electrolytes and food. I cannot stress this enough. Preparation is key!! Fossil Creek is accessed via Camp Verde. “Creek” = Camp Verde. There’s 8 different parking areas to access Fossil Creek. The Dixon Lewis Trailhead is closest, and Mazatzal is the furthest from the waterfall. Permits are required for BOTH, Bob Bear Trail and Fossil Creek from April 1 - October 1. At the time of this post (October), permits are not required…and it’s also a wonderful time to go! Pack out all of your trash (including orange peels). Please leave no trace.
