English : Hebrew point holam (U+05B9). Used to mark the vowel /o/. Normally combines on the left above the base consonant, including on Hebrew letter vav (where it very frequently represents holam male , pronounced as a long /oː/ before another consonant, just like the lettervav used alone without niqqud but red with matres lectionis where the consonant becomes silent). However this use in conjunction with vav caused reading ambiguities where the vav consonant is not silent and is to be pronounced with another vowel, and the holam is in fact associated with the previous consonant (this case is rare and interpreted as holam haser also pronounced the same way). Earlier encoded texts tried to distinguish this case by using ZWNJ (zero-width non-joiner) between the two syllables. Such encoding is deprecated for this rare case (occuring essentially in old Biblical texts but still much less than holam male ), where holam haser is now preferably encoded distinctly when it occurs above a non-silent consonantal vav , where the holam dot is shifted to the right side above vav . In modern Hebrew, holam haser and holam male are pronounced as the same vowel and written without distinction, even if their interpretation and reading may contextually change (between a silent vav or a consonantal vav ). Beside this last tricky case, the holam dot may contextually be rendered shifted further to the left in advanced typography, to be placed on the right side above the next letter, unless this letter holds another vowel sign.
