The Woman who Climbed Trees novel by Smriti Ravindra
Meena's parents marry her off at the age of 14 to a Nepali lad, age 21, whom she has never met. She must relocate to Nepal as per custom, leaving behind her childhood home and all of her known people, in order to embrace her husband's family's house and identity. Meena is left alone with her demanding mother-in-law while Manmohan attends college and spends the majority of the year in Kathmandu, far from the small town. Eventually, she finds solace and affection from her sister-in-law. The Women Who Climbed Trees is an amalgam of realism, ghost stories, myths, and folk tales that follows fearless Meena, and eventually her daughter, as she makes her way through foreign land and tries to balance the expectations of her new family amidst the ebbs and flows of her diasporic existence.
