One of the most important properties influencing the chemical behavior of an element is the electron affinity (EA). Among the remaining elements with unknown EA is astatine, where one of its isotopes, $^{211}$At, is remarkably well suited for targeted radionuclide therapy of cancer. [...]

The first experimental investigation of the electron affinity (EA) of a radioactive isotope has been conducted at the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility. The EA of the radioactive iodine isotope (128)I (t (1/2) = 25 min) was determined to be 3.059 052(38) eV. [...]

Upgrades of the GANDALPH photodetachment detector towards the determination of the electron affinity of astatine / Leimbach, David (Johannes Gutenberg Universitaet Mainz (DE)) ; Rothe, Sebastian (CERN) ; Bengtsson, Lars (Gothenburg University (SE)) ; Ringvall Moberg, Annie (Gothenburg University (SE)) ; Sundberg, Julia (Gothenburg University (SE)) ; Wendt, Klaus (Johannes Gutenberg Universitaet Mainz (DE)) ; Hanstorp, Dag (Gothenburg University (SE))
The Gothenburg ANion Detector for Affinity measurements by Laser PHotodetachment (GANDALPH) has recently been built for measurements of electron affinities (EA) of radioisotopes. A first measurement campaign is aimed towards the determination of the EA of astatine, the rarest naturally occurring element on earth. [...]

Laser photodetachment of radioactive ions: towards the determination of the electronegativity of astatine
Reference: Poster-2017-585

Negatively charged ions are mainly stabilized through the electron correlation effect. A measure of the stability of a negative ion is the electron affinity, which the energy gain by attaching an electron to a neutral atom. This fundamental quantity is, due to the almost general lack of bound excited states, the only atomic property that can be determined with high accuracy for negative ions. We will present the results of the first laser photodetachment studies of radioactive negative ions at CERN-ISOLDE. The photodetachment threshold for the radiogenic iodine isotope 128I was measured successfully, demonstrating the performance of the upgraded GANDALPH experimental beam line. The first detection of photo-detached astatine atoms marks a milestone towards the determination of the EA of this radioactive element.
