Simulations and experiments for dynamic aperture studies in the LHC ion operation / Kostoglou, Sofia (CERN) ; Sterbini, Guido (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Efthymiopoulos, Ilias (CERN) ; Hostettler, Michi (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN)
Dynamic Aperture (DA) studies, based on single-particle tracking simulations including important non-linear fields such as beam-beam effects, have played a crucial role in guiding the operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in proton-proton collisions. The correspondence between DA computed through simulations and the actual beam lifetime during operation has been established for proton beams through dedicated experiments at the LHC. [...]

A Framework for Dynamic Aperture Studies for Colliding Beams in the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider / Kostoglou, Sofia (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; De Maria, R (CERN) ; Papaphilippou, Yannis (CERN) ; Sterbini, Guido (CERN)
During the last physics run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), Dynamic Aperture (DA) studies have been successfully employed to optimize the accelerator’s performance by guiding the selection of the beam and machine parameters. In this paper, we present a framework for single-particle tracking simulations aiming to refine the envisaged operational scenario of the future LHC upgrade, the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), including strong non-linear fields such as beam-beam interactions. Long-Range Beam-Beam Orbit Effects in LHC, Simulations and Observations From Machine Operation in 2016 / Gorzawski, Arkadiusz (CERN) ; Fuchsberger, Kajetan (CERN) ; Hostettler, Michael (CERN) ; Pieloni, Tatiana (CERN) ; Wenninger, Jorg (CERN)
To limit the number of head on collisions to only one at the interaction point in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), two beams are colliding with a non zero crossing angle. Under the presence of such angle the closed orbits of the individual bunches in the bunch train varies due to the long-range beam-beam effects. [...]

Monitoring and modelling of the LHC emittance and luminosity evolution in 2018 / Papadopoulou, Stefania (CERN) ; Antoniou, Fanouria (CERN) ; Efthymiopoulos, Ilias (CERN) ; Hostettler, Michael (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Karastathis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Kostoglou, Sofia (CERN) ; Papaphilippou, Yannis (CERN) ; Trad, Georges (CERN)
Operating at 6.5 TeV, the LHC surpassed the expectations and delivered an average of 66 fb$^{−1}$ integrated luminosity to the two high luminosity experiments ATLAS and CMS by the end of 2018. In order to provide a continuous feedback to the machine coordination for further optimizing the performance, an automated tool for monitoring the main beam parameters and machine configurations, has been devised and extensively used. Luminosity and Lifetime Modeling and Optimization / Kostoglou, S (CERN) ; Antoniou, F (CERN) ; Efthymiopoulos, I (CERN) ; Iadarola, G (CERN) ; Karastathis, N (CERN) ; Papadopoulou, S (CERN) ; Papaphilippou, Y (CERN) ; Paraschou, K (CERN) ; Pellegrini, D (CERN) ; Sterbini, G (CERN) et al.
During Run 2, the continuous monitoring of the luminosity evolution has revealed the existence of lifetime degradation sources, beyond burn-off. By employing a bunch-bybunch analysis, beam-beam effects but also electron cloud have been identified as significant contributors to these additional losses. [...]

Optimizing the configuration of an operational cycle of a collider such as the LHC is a complex process, requiring various simulation studies. In particular, Dynamic Aperture (DA) simulations, based on particle tracking, serve as indispensable tools for achieving this goal. [...]

Dynamic aperture studies for the first run of High Luminosity LHC / Kostoglou, S (CERN) ; Bartosik, H (CERN) ; De Maria, R (CERN) ; Iadarola, G (CERN) ; Sterbini, G (CERN) ; Tomas Garcia, R (CERN)
Dynamic Aperture (DA) studies based on single-particle tracking simulations have proven to be a powerful tool for optimizing the performance of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), as well as its future High-Luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). The present paper presents the studies performed for the first year of HL-LHC operation at the beginning of the fourth operational run of the LHC. [...]

Crossing Angle Anti-Leveling at the LHC in 2017 / Karastathis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Fuchsberger, Kajetan (CERN) ; Hostettler, Michael (CERN) ; Papaphilippou, Yannis (CERN) ; Pellegrini, Dario (CERN)
In 2017, LHC incorporated in operation an anti-leveling procedure of adapting the crossing angle of the colliding beams in steps to increase the integrated luminosity. In this paper, we present the Dynamic Aperture simulations that were employed to identify the operational margins, and therefore define the leveling steps. [...]

Prospect of operating with limited skew quadrupole corrector availability in the LHC interaction regions / Soubelet, F (CERN ; Liverpool U.) ; Persson, T (CERN) ; Kostoglou, S (CERN) ; Tomás, R (CERN) ; Hostettler, M (CERN) ; Welsch, C P (Liverpool U.)
In the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), corrections of local Interaction Region (IR) linear coupling are of importance to control beam sizes at Interaction Points (IPs) and hence the luminosity performance, as well as to prevent a significant impact on the beam dynamics. During the LHC Run 3, the skew quadrupole corrector magnets used on either side of IPs are expected to exceed their radiation dose limit. [...]
