Chemical composition of nanoparticles from α-pinene nucleation and the influence of isoprene and relative humidity at low temperature
/ Caudillo, Lucía (Frankfurt U.) ; Rörup, Birte (Helsinki U.) ; Heinritzi, Martin (Frankfurt U.) ; Marie, Guillaume (Frankfurt U.) ; Simon, Mario (Frankfurt U.) ; Wagner, Andrea C (U. Biogenic organic precursors play an important role
in atmospheric new particle formation (NPF). One of the major precursor species is α-pinene, which upon oxidation can
form a suite of products covering a wide range of volatilities.
Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) comprise a
fraction of the oxidation products formed [...]

Observation of viscosity transition in α-pinene secondary organic aerosol
/ Järvinen, Emma (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Ignatius, Karoliina (TROPOS, Leibniz) ; Nichman, Leonid (Manchester U.) ; Kristensen, Thomas B (TROPOS, Leibniz) ; Fuchs, Claudia (PSI, Villigen) ; Hoyle, Christopher R (PSI, Villigen ; Davos Observ.) ; Höppel, Niko (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Corbin, Joel C (PSI, Villigen) ; Craven, Jill (Caltech) ; Duplissy, Jonathan (Helsinki U.) et al.
Under certain conditions, secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles can exist in the atmosphere in an amorphous solid or semi-solid state. To determine their relevance to processes such as ice nucleation or chemistry occurring within particles requires knowledge of the temperature and relative humidity (RH) range for SOA to exist in these states. We use a real-time temperature-programmed desorption chemical-ionization mass spectrometer (FIGAERO–CIMS) to measure particle-phase composition and volatility of nucleated particles, studying pure α-pinene oxidation over a wide temperature range (−50 °C to +25 °C) in the CLOUD chamber at CERN. Highly oxygenated organic molecules are much more abundant in particles formed at higher temperatures, shifting the compounds toward higher O/C and lower intrinsic (300 K) volatility. [...]

An intercomparison study of four different techniques for measuring the chemical composition of nanoparticles
/ Caudillo, Lucía (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Surdu, Mihnea (PSI, Villigen) ; Lopez, Brandon (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Wang, Mingyi (Carnegie Mellon U. ; Caltech) ; Thoma, Markus (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Bräkling, Steffen (LLNL, Livermore) ; Buchholz, Angela (Aalto U.) ; Simon, Mario (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Wagner, Andrea C (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Müller, Tatjana (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U. ; Mainz, Max Planck Inst.) et al.
Currently, the complete chemical characterization of nanoparticles
(< 100 nm) represents an analytical challenge, since these particles
are abundant in number but have negligible mass. Several methods for
particle-phase characterization have been recently developed to better
detect and infer more accurately the sources and fates of sub-100 nm
particles, but a detailed comparison of different approaches is missing.
Here we report on the chemical composition of secondary organic aerosol
(SOA) nanoparticles from experimental studies of α-pinene ozonolysis
at −50, −30, and −10 ∘C and intercompare the results measured by different
techniques. [...]

Photo-oxidation of Aromatic Hydrocarbons Produces Low-Volatility Organic Compounds
/ Wang, Mingyi (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Chen, Dexian (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Xiao, Mao (PSI, Villigen) ; Ye, Qing (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Stolzenburg, Dominik (Vienna U.) ; Hofbauer, Victoria (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Ye, Penglin (Aerodyne Research, Billerica) ; Vogel, Alexander L (Frankfurt U.) ; Mauldin, Roy L (U. To better understand the role of aromatic hydrocarbons in new-particle formation, we measured the particle-phase abundance and volatility of oxidation products following the reaction of aromatic hydrocarbons with OH radicals. For this we used thermal desorption in an iodide-adduct Time-of-Flight Chemical-Ionization Mass Spectrometer equipped with a Filter Inlet for Gases and AEROsols (FIGAERO-ToF-CIMS). [...]

Heterogeneous ice nucleation of viscous secondary organic aerosol produced from ozonolysis of α-pinene

There are strong indications that particles containing secondary organic aerosol (SOA) exhibit amorphous solid or semi-solid phase states in the atmosphere. This may facilitate heterogeneous ice nucleation and thus influence cloud properties. [...]

Sulfuric acid, amines and oxidized organics have been found to be important compounds in the nucleation and initial growth of atmospheric particles. Because of the challenges involved in determining the chemical composition of objects with very small mass, however, the properties of the freshly nucleated particles and the detailed pathways of their formation processes are still not clear. Terpenes are emitted by vegetation, and their oxidation in the
atmosphere is an important source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). A part of
this oxidation can proceed through an autoxidation process, yielding highly
oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) with low saturation vapor pressure. [...]
