In a carbon ion treatment the nuclear fragmentation of both target and beam projectiles impacts on the dose released on the tumor and on the surrounding healthy tissues. Carbon ion fragmentation occurring inside the patient body has to be studied in order to take into account this contribution. [...]

Benchmarking of FLUKA production cross sections of positron emission tomography isotopes for in-vivo range verification in hadron therapy / Aricò, Giulia (CERN) ; Battistoni, Giuseppe (INFN, Milan ; TIFPA-INFN, Trento) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Horst, Felix (Darmstadt, GSI ; Mittelhessen U., Giessen) ; Mairani, Andrea (HITS, Heidelberg ; pavia cnao) ; Schuy, Christoph (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Weber, Uli (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Ferrari, Alfredo (CERN)
Protons and carbon ions have been extensively used for radiotherapy treatments, and in comparison to conventional radiotherapy, they allow a more conformal dose to the target tumor, especially in case of deep-seated tumors. However, the accuracy of hadron therapy treatments is affected by uncertainties in the particle range calculations. [...]

In hadron therapy, the accelerated ions, interacting with the body of the patient, cause the fragmentation of both projectile and target nuclei. The fragments interact with the human tissues depositing energy both in the entrance channel and in the volume surrounding the tumor. [...]

In this paper, we investigate the use of a positron emission tomography (PET) system to monitor the proton therapy. The monitoring procedure is based on the comparison between the β+ activity generated in the irradiated volume during the treatment, with the β+ activity distribution obtained with Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. In proton-therapy clinical practice a constant RBE equal to 1.1 is adopted, regardless of the demonstrated RBE variations, which depends on physical and biological parameters. Among other mechanisms, nuclear interactions might influence the proton-RBE due to secondary heavier particles produced by target fragmentation that can significantly contribute to the total dose: an un-wanted and undetermined increase of normal tissues complications probability may occur. Ion beam irradiations can deliver conformal dose distributions minimizing damage to healthy tissues thanks to their characteristic dose profiles. Nevertheless, the location of the Bragg peak can be affected by different sources of range uncertainties: a critical issue is the treatment verification. [...]

Particle Therapy (PT) is an emerging technique, which makes use of charged particles to efficiently cure different kinds of solid tumors. The high precision in the hadrons dose deposition requires an accurate monitoring to prevent the risk of under-dosage of the cancer region or of over-dosage of healthy tissues. [...]
