Tail population studies in the CERN Proton Synchrotron
/ Bozatzis, Miltiadis (Aristotle U., Thessaloniki ; CERN) ; Asvesta, Foteini (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Lasheen, Alexandre (CERN) ; Maclean, Ewen (CERN) ; Prebibaj, Tirsi (CERN) ; Van Goethem, Wietse (CERN)
The beam quality in terms of the transverse beam profiles from the CERN injectors plays a crucial role for the luminosity production at the LHC. Transverse tails beyond a Gaussian distribution have been observed in all the LHC injectors and efforts to optimize them are ongoing, as they can perturb operations due to large losses at LHC injection. LHC optics commissioning in 2023 and 2024
/ Persson, Tobias (CERN) ; Wegscheider, Andreas (CERN) ; Fol, Elena (CERN) ; Maclean, Ewen (CERN) ; Carlier, Felix (CERN) ; Soubelet, Felix (CERN) ; Trad, Georges (CERN) ; Keintzel, Jacqueline (CERN) ; Cardona, Javier (Columbia U.) ; Dilly, Joschua (CERN) et al.
The LHC machine configuration was changed in 2023 compared to previous years, requiring a new set of optics configurations to be measured and corrected. A telescopic optics was deployed in energy the ramp for the first time, which gave rise to a beta-beating of up to 25% [...]

Evolution of special LHC optics configurations Run 3 update

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) employs special optics and configurations, alongside low-beta* collision optics, to address specific experimental requirements. These include calibrating luminosity monitors (vdM) and facilitating forward physics measurements in TOTEM and ALFA experiments (high-beta). [...]

Sextupole RDTs in the LHC at injection and in the ramp
/ Horney, S J (CERN ; Oxford U.) ; Maclean, E (CERN) ; Burrows, P (Oxford U.) ; Carlier, F (CERN) ; Dilly, J (CERN) ; Deniau, L (CERN) ; Ferrentino, V (CERN) ; Fol, E (CERN) ; Hofer, M (CERN) ; Keintzel, J (CERN) et al.
During 2023, examination of the action dependence of sextupolar resonance driving terms (RDT) in the LHC at injection, as measured with an AC-dipole, demonstrated that a robust measurement of the RDTs could still be achieved even with very small amplitude kicks, typically used for linear optics studies. Consequently, analysis of optics measurements from 2022 and 2023 during the LHC energy ramp allowed a first measurement of the sextupole resonance evolution. [...]

Chapter 28: Non-linear Optics Measurements and Corrections
/ Maclean, E H (CERN) ; Carlier, F (CERN) ; Dilly, J W (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, M (CERN) ; Karastathis, N ; Persson, T H B (CERN) ; Tomás, R (CERN)
Nonlinear optics errors in low-β* insertions pose a serious challenge to successful operation of the HL-LHC. LHC experience however has demonstrated that the previously assumed correction strategy, based upon ideal compensation of selected nonlinear resonances, as determined from magnetic measurements, suffers from several limitations. LHC Optics Measurements from Transverse Damper for the High Intensity Frontier

Current and future accelerator projects are pushing the brightness and intensity frontier, creating new challenges for turn-by-turn based optics measurements. Transverse oscillations are limited in amplitude due to particle losses. [...]

Emittance Growth From Electron Clouds Forming in the LHC Arc Quadrupoles
/ Paraschou, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Deniau, Laurent (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Maclean, Ewen (CERN) ; Mether, Lotta (CERN) ; Papaphilippou, Yannis (CERN) ; Pieloni, Tatiana (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Potdevin, Joséphine (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) et al.
Operation of the Large Hadron Collider with proton bunches spaced 25 ns apart favours the formation of electron clouds. In fact, a slow emittance growth is observed in proton bunches at injection energy (450 GeV), showing a bunch-by-bunch signature that is compatible with electron cloud effects. [...]
