Chapter 28: Non-linear Optics Measurements and Corrections / Maclean, E H (CERN) ; Carlier, F (CERN) ; Dilly, J W (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, M (CERN) ; Karastathis, N ; Persson, T H B (CERN) ; Tomás, R (CERN)
Nonlinear optics errors in low-β* insertions pose a serious challenge to successful operation of the HL-LHC. LHC experience however has demonstrated that the previously assumed correction strategy, based upon ideal compensation of selected nonlinear resonances, as determined from magnetic measurements, suffers from several limitations. [...]

Corrections of high-order nonlinearities in the LHC and High-Luminosity LHC beam optics / Dilly, Joschua Werner
The impact of high-order nonlinear magnetic field errors on the performance of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its planned High-Luminosity upgrade, the HL-LHC, has been extensively studied [...]

This note contains a condensed summary of the various beam tests which took place in 2022 in order to validate the machine configuration planned to be deployed for the 2023 proton run of the LHC, including in particular a combined ramp and anti-telescopic squeeze, the rotation of the external crossing angle in LHCb, and beam operation with up to 1.8 × 1011 p/b..

Report from LHC MD 3312: Replicating HL-LHC DA / Dilly, Joschua Werner (Humboldt University of Berlin (DE)) ; Albert, Markus (CERN) ; Carlier, Felix Simon (CERN) ; Coello De Portugal - Martinez Vazquez, Jaime Maria ; Dalena, Barbara (Université Paris-Saclay (FR)) ; Fol, Elena (CERN) ; Hofer, Michael (CERN) ; Maclean, Ewen Hamish (CERN) ; Malina, Lukas ; Persson, Tobias Hakan Bjorn (CERN) et al.
During MD3312 on the 30.10.2018 the non-linear conditions in the insertion regions of the planned HL-LHC were replicated to our best knowledge and within the capabilities of the hardware currently available in the LHC: A flat ATS-optics scheme of beta* = 15cm / 60cm in IP1 and IP5 was applied as well as sextupole, octupole and (normal) dodecapole errors were introduced into the machine via the corrector magnets in the interaction regions. Prospects for beam-based study of dodecapole nonlinearities in the CERN High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider / Maclean, Ewen Hamish (CERN) ; Carlier, Felix Simon (CERN) ; Dilly, Joschua Werner (Humboldt University of Berlin (DE)) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Tomas Garcia, Rogelio (CERN)
Nonlinear magnetic errors in low-β insertions can have a significant impact on the beam-dynamics of a collider such as the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). Indeed, correction of sextupole and octupole magnetic errors in LHC experimental insertions has yielded clear operational benefits in recent years. [...]

Optics Measurement by Excitation of Betatron Oscillations in the CERN PSB / Maclean, Ewen H (CERN) ; Antoniou, Fanouria (CERN) ; Asvesta, Foteini (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Dilly, Joschua W (CERN) ; Fol, Elena (CERN) ; Garcia Morales, Hector (CERN) ; Hofer, Michael (CERN) ; Keintzel, Jacqueline (CERN) et al.
Optics measurement from analysis of turn-by-turn BPM data of betatron oscillations excited with a kicker magnet has been employed very successfully in many machines but faces particular challenges in the CERN PSB where BPM to BPM phase advances are sub-optimal for optics reconstruction. Experience using turn-by-turn oscillation data for linear optics measurements during PSB commissioning in2021 is presented, with implications for the prospect of such techniques in the PSB more generally..
