Short Electron Beam Bunch Characterization Through Measurement of Terahertz Radiation / Zhang, Shukui ; Benson, S V ; Douglas, David ; Shinn, Michelle D ; Williams, Gwyn
Characterization of the electron beam bunch length of the upgrade FEL at Jefferson Lab was performed by analyzing the FTIR spectra of the coherent terahertz pulses. The results are compared with autocorrelation from a scanning polarization autocorrelator that measures the optical transition radiation. [...]

Making an Inexpensive Electromagnetic Wiggler Using Sheet Materials for the Coils / Herman-Biallas, George ; Benson, S V ; Hiatt, Thomas ; Neil, George ; Snyder, Michael
An inexpensive electromagnetic wiggler, made with twenty-eight, 4 cm periods with a K of 1 and gap of 2.6 cm was made within 10 weeks after receipt of order by an industrial machine shop. The coil design used sheet and plate materials cut to shapes using water jet cutting and was assembled in a simple stack design. [...]

High Power Lasing in the IR Upgrade FEL at Jefferson Lab / Benson, S V ; Beard, Kevin ; Behre, Chris ; Herman-Biallas, George ; Boyce, James ; Douglas, David ; Dylla, Fred ; Evans, Richard ; Grippo, A ; Gubeli, Joe et al.
We report on progress in commissioning the IR Upgrade facility at Jefferson Lab. Operation at high power has been demonstrated at 5.7 microns with over 4 kW of continuous power output and a recirculated electron beam power of up to 800 kW. [...]

High Average Power Operation of a Scraper-Outcoupled Free-Electron Laser / Shinn, Michelle D ; Behre, Chris ; Benson, S V ; Bevins, Michael ; Bullard, Don ; Coleman, James ; Dillon-Townes, L ; Elliott, Tom ; Gubeli, Joe ; Hardy, David et al.
We describe the design, construction, and operation of a high average power free electron laser using scraper outcoupling. Using the FEL in this all-reflective configuration, we achieved approximately 2 kW of stable output at 10 um. [...]

Longitudinal Space Charge Effects in the JLAB IR FEL SRF Linac / Hernandez-Garcia, Carlos ; Beard, Kevin ; Behre, Chris ; Benson, S V ; Herman-Biallas, George ; Boyce, James ; Douglas, David ; Dylla, Fred ; Evans, Richard ; Grippo, A et al.
Observations of energy spread asymmetry when operating the Linac on either side of crest and longitudinal emittance growth have been confirmed by extending PARMELA simulations from the injector to the end of the first SRF Linac module. The asymmetry can be explained by the interaction of the accelerating electric field with that from longitudinal space charge effects within the electron bunch. [...]

The Jefferson Lab (JLab) 10 kW IR Upgrade FEL DC GaAs photocathode gun is presently the highest average current electron source operational in the U.S., delivering a record 9.1 mA CW, 350 kV electron beam with 122 pC/bunch at 75 MHz rep rate. Pulsed operation has also been demonstrated with 8 mA per pulse (110 pC/bunch) in 16 ms-long pulses at 2 Hz rep rate. [...]

A key technology issue of ERL devices for high-power free-electron laser (FEL) and 4th generation light sources is the demonstration of reliable, high-brightness, high-power injector operation. Ongoing programs that target up to 1 Ampere injector performance at emittance values consistent with the requirements of these applications are described. [...]
