Containerization in the ATLAS Offline Code Management System / Undrus, Alexander (Brookhaven National Laboratory (US)) ; Lee, Chris (Stony Brook University (US)) ; Ye, Shuwei (Brookhaven National Laboratory (US)) ; De Silva, Asoka (TRIUMF (CA)) /ATLAS Collaboration
The ATLAS offline code management system serves as a collaborative framework for developing a code base totaling more than 5 million lines. Supporting up to 50 nightly release branches, the ATLAS Nightly System offers abundant opportunities for updating existing software and developing new tools for forthcoming experimental stages within a multi-platform environment. The ATLAS experiment software on ARM / Elmsheuser, Johannes (Brookhaven National Laboratory (US)) ; Barreiro Megino, Fernando Harald (University of Texas at Arlington (US)) ; De Salvo, Alessandro (Sapienza Universita e INFN, Roma I (IT)) ; De Silva, Asoka (TRIUMF (CA)) ; Hauser, Reiner (Michigan State University (US)) ; Konstantinov, Dmitri (Institute for High Energy Physics of NRC Kurchatov Institute (RU)) ; Krasznahorkay, Attila (CERN) ; Lassnig, Mario (CERN) ; Sailer, Andre (CERN) ; Snyder, Scott (Brookhaven National Laboratory (US))
With an increased dataset obtained during the Run-3 of the LHC at CERN and the even larger expected increase of the dataset by more than one order of magnitude for the HL-LHC, the ATLAS experiment is reaching the limits of the current data processing model in terms of traditional CPU resources based on x86\_64 architectures and an extensive program for software upgrades towards the HL-LHC has been set up. This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the third International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to A-A, which took place in August 2019 in Lund, Sweden. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field and try to come up with concrete suggestions for how to make progress on both the experimental and theoretical sides. Prospects for Fundamental Physics with LISA / LISA Collaboration
In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. Containers usage on the ATLAS grid infrastructure / Forti, Alessandra (School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Manchester) ; Filipcic, Andrej (Jozef Stefan Institute) ; Love, Peter (Lancaster University, Department of Physics) ; Nilsson, Paul (Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)) ; De Silva, Asoka (TRIUMF) ; Heinrich, Lukas (Department of Physics, New York University) ; Maeno, Tadashi (Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)) ; De Salvo, Alessandro (INFN Roma and Sapienza Universita' di Roma, Dipartimento di Fisica) /ATLAS Collaboration
Containerization is a lightweight form of virtualization that allows reproducibility and isolation responding to a number of long standing use cases in running the ATLAS software on the grid. The development of Singularity in particular with the capability to run as a standalone executable allows for containers to be integrated in the ATLAS (and other experiments) submission framework. Xcache in the ATLAS Distributed Computing Environment / ATLAS Collaboration
Built upon the Xrootd Proxy Cache (Xcache), we developed additional features to adapt the ATLAS distributed computing and data environment, especially its data management system RUCIO, to help improve the cache hit rate, as well as features that make the Xcache easy to use, similar to the way the Squid cache is used by the HTTP protocol. We are optimizing Xcache for the HPC environments, and adapting the HL-LHC Data Lakes design as its component for data delivery [...]
