Large-scale alignments from WMAP and Planck / Copi, Craig J. (Case Western Reserve U., CERCA) ; Huterer, Dragan (Michigan U.) ; Schwarz, Dominik J. (Bielefeld U.) ; Starkman, Glenn D. (CERN ; Case Western Reserve U., CERCA)
We revisit the alignments of the largest structures observed in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using the seven and nine-year WMAP and first-year Planck data releases. The observed alignments -- the quadrupole with the octopole and their joint alignment with the direction of our motion with respect to the CMB (the dipole direction) and the geometry of the Solar System (defined by the Ecliptic plane) -- are generally in good agreement with results from the previous WMAP data releases. Lack of large-angle TT correlations persists in WMAP and Planck / Copi, Craig J. (Case Western Reserve U. ; Case Western Reserve U., CERCA) ; Huterer, Dragan (Michigan U.) ; Schwarz, Dominik J. (Bielefeld U.) ; Starkman, Glenn D. (Case Western Reserve U. ; CERN ; Case Western Reserve U., CERCA)
The lack of large-angle correlations in the observed microwave background temperature fluctuations persists in the final-year maps from WMAP and the first cosmological data release from Planck. We find a statistically robust and significant result: p-values for the missing correlations lying below 0.24 per cent (i.e. [...]

Large-Angle CMB Suppression and Polarisation Predictions / Copi, C.J. (Case Western Reserve U. ; Case Western Reserve U., CERCA) ; Huterer, D. (Michigan U.) ; Schwarz, D.J. (Bielefeld U.) ; Starkman, G.D. (Case Western Reserve U. ; Case Western Reserve U., CERCA ; CERN)
The anomalous lack of large angle temperature correlations has been a surprising feature of the CMB since first observed by COBE-DMR and subsequently confirmed and strengthened by WMAP. This anomaly may point to the need for modifications of the standard model of cosmology or may show that our Universe is a rare statistical fluctuation within that model. [...]

Can extragalactic foregrounds explain the large-angle CMB anomalies? / Rakic, Aleksandar (Bielefeld U.) ; Rasanen, Syksy (CERN) ; Schwarz, Dominik J. (Bielefeld U.)
We address the effect of an extended local foreground on the low-l anomalies found in the CMB. Recent X-ray catalogues point us to the existence of very massive superstructures at the 100 h^(-1) Mpc scale that contribute significantly to the dipole velocity profile. [...]

Particle cosmology / Schwarz, Dominik J (speaker) (Bielefeld University, D)
The understanding of the Universe at the largest and smallest scales traditionally has been the subject of cosmology and particle physics, respectively. Studying the evolution of the Universe connects today's large scales with the tiny scales in the very early Universe and provides the link between the physics of particles and of the cosmos. [...]

Microwave sky and the local Rees-Sciama effect / Rakic, Aleksandar (Bielefeld U.) ; Rasanen, Syksy (CERN) ; Schwarz, Dominik J. (Bielefeld U.)
The microwave sky shows unexpected features at the largest angular scales, among them the alignments of the dipole, quadrupole and octopole. Motivated by recent X-ray cluster studies, we investigate the possibility that local structures at the 100 h^-1 Mpc scale could be responsible for such correlations. [...]

Is the low-l microwave background cosmic? / Schwarz, Dominik J (CERN) ; Starkman, G D (Case Western Reserve University ; CERN) ; Copi, Craig J (Case Western Reserve Univ., Cleveland,) ; Huterer, Dragan (Case Western Reserve Univ., Cleveland)
The examination of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies measured with the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe (WMAP) was discussed. It was found that the large-angle (low-l) correlations of the CMB exhibited several statistically significant anomalies compared to the standard inflationary cosmology [...]

Primordial fluctuations and cosmological inflation after WMAP 1.0 / Schwarz, Dominik J (CERN) ; Terrero-Escalante, Cesar A (CERN)
The observational constraints on the primordial power spectrum have tightened considerably with the release of the first year analysis of the WMAP observations, especially when combined with the results from other CMB experiments and galaxy redshift surveys. These observations allow us to constrain the physics of cosmological inflation: (i) The data show that the Hubble distance is almost constant during inflation. [...]

The power spectrum of SUSY-CDM on sub-galactic scales / Green, A M ; Hofmann, S ; Schwarz, Dominik J
The formation of large scale structure is independent of the nature of the cold dark matter (CDM), however the fate of very small scale inhomogeneities depends on the micro-physics of the CDM particles. We investigate the matter power spectrum for scales that enter the Hubble radius well before matter-radiation equality, and follow its evolution until the time when the first inhomogeneities become non-linear. [...]

The first second of the Universe / Schwarz, Dominik J. (CERN)
The history of the Universe after its first second is now tested by high quality observations of light element abundances and temperature anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background. The epoch of the first second itself has not been tested directly yet; however, it is constrained by experiments at particle and heavy ion accelerators. [...]
