Beam-Material Interaction / Mokhov, N.V. (Fermilab) ; Cerutti, F. (CERN)
Th is paper is motivated by the growing importance of better understanding of the phenomena and consequences of high- intensity energetic particle beam interactions with accelerator, generic target , and detector components. It reviews the principal physical processes of fast-particle interactions with matter, effects in materials under irradiation, materials response, related to component lifetime and performance, simulation techniques, and methods of mitigating the impact of radiation on the components and envir onment in challenging current and future application

A detailed model of the High Luminosity LHC inner triplet region with new large-aperture Nb$_{3}$Sn magnets, field maps, corrector packages, and segmented tungsten inner absorbers was built and implemented into the FLUKA and MARS15 codes. In the optimized configuration, the peak power density averaged over the magnet inner cable width is safely below the quench limit. [...]

Machine-induced showers entering the ATLAS and CMS detectors in the LHC / Bruce, R (CERN) ; Assmann, R W (CERN) ; Boccone, V (CERN) ; Burkhardt, H (CERN) ; Cerutti, F (CERN) ; Ferrari, A (CERN) ; Huhtinen, M (CERN) ; Kozanecki, W (CERN) ; Levinsen, Y (CERN) ; Mereghetti, A (CERN) et al.
One source of experimental background in the LHC is showers induced by particles hitting the upstream collimators or particles that have been scattered on the residual gas. We estimate the flux and distribution of particles entering the ATLAS and CMS detectors through FLUKA simulations starting either in the tertiary collimators or with inelastic beam-gas interactions.
