Towards Beam-Beam Simulations for FCC-ee
/ Kicsiny, Peter (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Buffat, Xavier (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Pieloni, Tatiana (EPFL-ISIC, Lausanne) ; Schulte, Daniel (CERN) ; Seidel, Mike (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; PSI, Villigen)
The FCC-ee (Future Circular Collider) lepton collider is currently the most favored next generation research infrastructure project at CERN, aimed at studying properties of standard model particles with the highest precision ever. The chosen parameters of the machine yield unprecedented conditions which give rise to previously unseen dynamical effects during collisions. [...]

A Framework for Dynamic Aperture Studies for Colliding Beams in the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider
/ Kostoglou, Sofia (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; De Maria, R (CERN) ; Papaphilippou, Yannis (CERN) ; Sterbini, Guido (CERN)
During the last physics run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), Dynamic Aperture (DA) studies have been successfully employed to optimize the accelerator’s performance by guiding the selection of the beam and machine parameters. In this paper, we present a framework for single-particle tracking simulations aiming to refine the envisaged operational scenario of the future LHC upgrade, the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), including strong non-linear fields such as beam-beam interactions. [...]

First results of the compensation of the beam-beam effect with DC wires in the LHC
/ Sterbini, Guido (CERN) ; Amorim, David (CERN ; Grenoble, INP) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Buffat, Xavier (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Carver, Lee (CERN) ; Cattenoz, Gregory (CERN) ; Effinger, Ewald (CERN) et al.
The compensation of the long-range beam-beam interactions using DC wires is presently under study as an option for enhancing the machine performance in the framework of the High-Luminosity LHC Project (HL-LHC). The original idea dates back more than 15 years ago. [...]

Assessment of Linear and Non-Linear Optics Errors due to Beam-Beam with Multipoles for the High Luminosity LHC
/ Medina Medrano, Luis (Guanajuato U. ; CERN) ; Barranco García, Javier (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Buffat, Xavier (CERN) ; Pieloni, Tatiana (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Tomás, Rogelio (CERN)
Study of the head-on and long-range beam-beam effects in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) is of interest to evaluate their potential impact on performance (in the form of luminosity imbalance) and machine operation (collimator system), and, depending on their magnitude, correction schemes might be necessary to minimize them. In this work, both the β-beating at zero amplitude and its amplitude-dependence are computed for the current HL-LHC baseline optics and parameters, as well as the amplitude detuning, at the main interaction points and collimators. [...]

/ Kostoglou, Sofia (CERN) ; Karastathis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Papaphilippou, Yannis (CERN) ; Pellegrini, Dario (CERN) ; Zisopoulos, Panagiotis (Uppsala U. ; CERN)
Noise can have a significant impact on the beam dynamics in the LHC, enhancing diffusion processes and leading to emittance blowup. In order to study the details of such effects with computer simulations, a new set of tools is being developed. [...]

Observations of Beam Losses at the LHC During Reduction of Crossing Angle

Manchester (main)) ; Gorzawski, Arkadiusz (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; CERN) ; Pieloni, Tatiana (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Tambasco, Claudia (CERN) ; Wenninger, Jorg (CERN)
Several machine development studies have been performed in 2016 at the LHC in order to evaluate the effects of reducing the crossing angles in favor of defining the maximum achievable luminosity in the ATLAS and CMS experiments. At the end of the LHC proton-proton run at 6.5TeV the reduction of the crossing angle from 185urad to 140urad was operationally implemented. [...]

Beam Dynamics Studies to Develop a High-energy Luminosity Model for the LHC
/ Campogiani, Giovanna (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Papaphilippou, Yannis (CERN)
Luminosity, the key figure of merit of a collider as the LHC, depends on the brightness of the colliding beams. This makes the intensity dependent beam-beam effect the dominant performance limiting factor at collision. [...]
