/ Kumar, V (West Scotland U. ; Strathclyde U.) ; Chapman, R (West Scotland U. ; Strathclyde U.) ; O'Donnell, D (West Scotland U. ; Strathclyde U.) ; Ollier, J (West Scotland U. ; Strathclyde U.) ; Orlandi, R (JAEA, Ibaraki) ; Smith, J F (West Scotland U. ; Strathclyde U.) ; Spohr, K -M (West Scotland U. ; Strathclyde U.) ; Torres, D A (West Scotland U. ; Strathclyde U.) ; Wady, P (West Scotland U. ; Strathclyde U.) ; Tandel, S K (Shiv Nadar U.) et al.
Excited states of the neutron-rich niobium isotopes Nb96,97,98,4196,97,98,99 have been populated in two experiments which used fusion-fission and multinucleon binary grazing reactions to populate high-spin yrast states. In the multinucleon-transfer experiment, a 530-MeV beam of Zr96 ions was incident on a thin Sn124 target; projectile-like ejectiles were detected and identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the associated γ rays were detected using the CLARA array of Ge detectors. Chem.) ; Butler, P A (Liverpool U.) ; Gaffney, L P (Liverpool U. ; CERN) ; Abrahams, K (Western Cape U.) ; Bowry, M (West Scotland U. ; TRIUMF) ; Cederkäll, J (Lund U.) ; Chupp, T (U. Michigan, Ann Arbor) ; de Angelis, G (INFN, Legnaro) ; De Witte, H (Leuven U.) ; Garrett, P E (Guelph U.) et al.
The nature of quadrupole and octupole collectivity in $^{222}$Rn was investigated by determining the electric-quadrupole (E2) and octupole (E3) matrix elements using subbarrier, multistep Coulomb excitation. The radioactive $^{222}$Rn beam, accelerated to 4.23 MeV/u, was provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. [...]

Excited states in $^{217}$Ra populated in the α decay of $^{221}$Th
/ Parr, E (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Smith, J F (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Greenlees, P T (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Auranen, K (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Chapman, R (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Cullen, D M (Manchester U.) ; Grahn, T (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Grocutt, L (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Herzáň, A (Jyvaskyla U. ; Bratislava, Inst. Phys.) ; Herzberg, R D (Liverpool U.) et al.
Fine structure in the α decay of $^{221}_{90}$Th, populating excited states in $^{217}_{88}$Ra, was studied using αγ-coincidence spectroscopy. Two α-decay branches from $^{221}$Th have been newly observed, with $E_{\alpha} \mathrm{(keV)} [b_{\alpha}(\%)]=7951(8)[0.14(3)]$ and $8247(3)[1.51(12)]$, together with three previously known branches. High-spin states of $^{218}$Th
/ O'Donnell, D (SUPA, UK ; Liverpool U. ; IIT, Roorkee) ; Page, R D (Liverpool U.) ; Grahn, T (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Ali, F A (Liverpool U. ; Sulaimaniya U.) ; Auranen, K (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Capponi, L (SUPA, UK) ; Carroll, R J (Liverpool U.) ; Chishti, M M R (SUPA, UK) ; Drummond, M C (Liverpool U.) ; Greenlees, P T (Jyvaskyla U.) et al.
High-spin states in the $N = 128$ nucleus $^{218}$Th have been investigated following fusion–evaporation reactions, using the recoil-decay tagging technique. Due to the short-lived nature of the ground state of $^{218}$Th prompt $\gamma$ rays have been correlated with the $\alpha$ decay of the daughter nucleus $^{214}$Ra. [...]

First Exploration of Neutron Shell Structure Below Lead and Beyond $\boldsymbol{N=126}$
/ Tang, T.L. (Argonne) ; Kay, B.P. (Argonne) ; Hoffman, C.R. (Argonne) ; Schiffer, J.P. (Argonne) ; Sharp, D.K. (Manchester U.) ; Gaffney, L.P. (CERN) ; Freeman, S.J. (Manchester U.) ; Mumpower, M.R. ; Arokiaraj, A. ; Baader, E.F. (CERN) et al.
The nuclei below lead but with more than 126 neutrons are crucial to an understanding of the astrophysical $r$-process in producing nuclei heavier than $A\sim190$. Despite their importance, the structure and properties of these nuclei remain experimentally untested as they are difficult to produce in nuclear reactions with stable beams. [...]

Evolution of Octupole Deformation in Radium Nuclei from Coulomb Excitation of Radioactive $^{222}\mathrm{Ra}$ and $^{228}\mathrm{Ra}$ Beams
/ Butler, P.A. (U. Liverpool (main)) ; Gaffney, L.P. (U. Liverpool (main) ; CERN) ; Spagnoletti, P. (Paisley U.) ; Abrahams, K. (Western Cape U.) ; Bowry, M. (Paisley U. ; TRIUMF) ; Cederkäll, J. There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable pear shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole ($E3$) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in $^{222,228}$Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. The observation of vibrating pear-shapes in radon nuclei
/ Butler, P.A. (Liverpool U.) ; Gaffney, L.P. (Liverpool U. ; CERN) ; Spagnoletti, P. (West Scotland U.) ; Konki, J. (CERN) ; Scheck, M. (West Scotland U.) ; Smith, J.F. There is a large body of evidence that atomic nuclei can undergo octupole distortion and assume the shape of a pear. This phenomenon is important for measurements of electric-dipole moments of atoms, which would indicate CP violation and hence probe physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. [...]

Lifetimes of intermediate-spin states in two rotational bands of $^{99}Zr$ have been measured. These states were populated following the neutron-induced fission of $^{235}U$ at the PF1B beamline of the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, during the EXILL-FATIMA campaign. [...]
