Optimizing Geant4 Hadronic Models / Genser, Krzysztof (Fermilab) ; Jun, Soon Yung (Fermilab) ; Ribon, Alberto (CERN) ; Uzhinsky, Vladimir (Dubna, JINR) ; Yarba, Julia (Fermilab)
Geant4, the leading detector simulation toolkit used in high energy physics, employs a set of physics models to simulate interactions of particles with matter across a wide range of energies. These models, especially the hadronic ones, rely largely on directly measured cross-sections and inclusive characteristics, and use physically motivated parameters. [...]

Measurement of the charge asymmetry of electrons from the decays of $W$ bosons produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV / CDF Collaboration
At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, high-mass electron-neutrino ($e\nu$) pairs are produced predominantly in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow W(\rightarrow e\nu) + X$. The asymmetry of the electron and positron yield as a function of their pseudorapidity constrain the slope of the ratio of the $u$- to $d$-quark parton distributions versus the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the quarks. Vectorization of Random Number Generation and Reproducibility of Concurrent Particle Transport Simulation / Jun, S Y (Fermilab) ; Canal, P (Fermilab) ; Apostolakis, J (CERN) ; Gheata, A (CERN) ; Moneta, L (CERN)
Efficient random number generation with high quality statistical properties and exact reproducibility of Monte Carlo simulations are important requirements in many areas of computational science. VecRNG is a package providing pseudo-random number generation (pRNG) in the context of a new library VecMath. [...]

Full detector simulation was among the largest CPU consumer in all CERN experiment software stacks for the first two runs of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the early 2010's, the projections were that simulation demands would scale linearly with luminosity increase, compensated only partially by an increase of computing resources. [...]

SIMD acceleration can potentially boost by factors the application throughput. Achieving efficient SIMD vectorization for scalar code with complex data flow and branching logic, goes however way beyond breaking some loop dependencies and relying on the compiler. [...]

GEANT4 Parameter Tuning Using Professor / Elvira, V. (Fermilab) ; Fields, L. (Fermilab) ; Genser, K.L. (Fermilab) ; Hatcher, R. (Fermilab) ; Ivanchenko, V. (CERN ; Tomsk State U.) ; Kelsey, M. (SLAC) ; Koi, T. (SLAC) ; Perdue, G.N. (Fermilab) ; Ribon, A. (CERN) ; Uzhinsky, V. (CERN) et al.
The Geant4 toolkit is used extensively in high energy physics to simulate the passage of particles through matter and to predict effects such as detector efficiencies and smearing. Geant4 uses many underlying models to predict particle interaction kinematics, and uncertainty in these models leads to uncertainty in high energy physics measurements. [...]

In the fall 2016, GeantV went through a thorough community evaluation of the project status and of its strategy for sharing the R&D; results with the LHC experiments and with the HEP simulation community in general. Following this discussion, GeantV has engaged onto an ambitious 2-year road-path aiming to deliver a beta version that has most of the final design and several performance features of the final product, partially integrated with some of the experiment’s frameworks.
