ICARUS at the Fermilab Short-Baseline Neutrino program: initial operation
/ ICARUS Collaboration
The ICARUS collaboration employed the 760-ton T600 detector in a successful three-year physics run at the underground LNGS laboratory studying neutrino oscillations with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam (CNGS) and searching for atmospheric neutrino interactions. ICARUS performed a sensitive search for LSND-like anomalous $\nu_e$ appearance in the CNGS beam, which contributed to the constraints on the allowed parameters to a narrow region around 1 eV$^2$, where all the experimental results can be coherently accommodated at 90% C.L.. Comparison between photon detection efficiency and tetraphenyl-butadiene coating stability of photomultiplier tubes immersed in liquid argon
/ Burak, B (CERN) ; Garcia, P (Barcelona, IFAE) ; Jesús-Valls, C (Barcelona, IFAE) ; Lux, T (Barcelona, IFAE) ; Menegolli, A (INFN, Pavia ; Pavia U.) ; Prata, M C (INFN, Pavia ; Pavia U.) ; Raselli, G L (INFN, Pavia ; Pavia U.) ; Rossella, M (INFN, Pavia ; Pavia U.) ; Vargas, D (Barcelona, IFAE) ; Vollenberg, W (CERN)
Liquid argon detectors are an interesting option for neutrino experiments. The high density of liquid argon allows using it directly as target for neutrino interactions. [...]

A particle detection system that exploits the scintillation light produced by ionizing particles in liquid argon (LAr) has been assembled at CERN. The system is based on 10 large-area photomultiplier tubes (PMT) immersed in a 1500-liter dewar filled with liquid argon and equipped with an extendible feed-through and mechanical support for an alpha source (241Am). Characterization of SiPM arrays with common bias and common readout for applications in liquid argon
/ Babicz, Marta (CERN ; Cracow, INP) ; Cervi, Tommaso (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Menegolli, Alessandro (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Prata, M C (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Raselli, Gian Luca (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Rossella, Massimo (INFN, Pavia ; Pavia U.)
We have built a number of test arrays made of 16 SiPMs of 3 × 3 mm$^2$ with a mixed series–parallel configuration and common bias and readout. With this technique it is possible to increase the total active area keeping low the bias voltage and readout channels. [...]

An innovative technique for TPB deposition on convex window photomultiplier tubes
/ Bonesini, M. (INFN, Milan Bicocca) ; Cervi, T. (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Falcone, A. (INFN, Pavia ; Texas U., Arlington) ; Kose, U. (CERN) ; Mazza, R. (INFN, Milan Bicocca) ; Menegolli, A. Tetraphenyl-butadiene (TPB) is an organic fluorescent chemical compound generally used as wavelength shifter thanks to its extremely high efficiency to convert ultra-violet photons into visible light. A common method to use TPB with detectors sensitive to visible light, such as photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), is to deposit thin layers on the device window. [...]

Open questions are still present in fundamental Physics and Cosmology, like the nature of Dark Matter, the matter-antimatter asymmetry and the validity of the particle interaction Standard Model. Addressing these questions requires a new generation of massive particle detectors exploring the subatomic and astrophysical worlds. [...]
