ICARUS at the Fermilab Short-Baseline Neutrino program: initial operation / ICARUS Collaboration
The ICARUS collaboration employed the 760-ton T600 detector in a successful three-year physics run at the underground LNGS laboratory studying neutrino oscillations with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam (CNGS) and searching for atmospheric neutrino interactions. ICARUS performed a sensitive search for LSND-like anomalous $\nu_e$ appearance in the CNGS beam, which contributed to the constraints on the allowed parameters to a narrow region around 1 eV$^2$, where all the experimental results can be coherently accommodated at 90% C.L.. The scintillation light detection system of ICARUS-T600: Hardware implementation and early results / ICARUS Collaboration
The ICARUS-T600 Liquid Argon (LAr) Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is taking data with the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam-line (BNB) in the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program to search for a possible LSND-like sterile neutrino signal. A light detection system, based on 360 Hamamatsu R5912-MOD Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMTs) deployed behind the TPC wire chambers, has been realized to detect vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons produced by ionizing particles in LAr. A particle detection system that exploits the scintillation light produced by ionizing particles in liquid argon (LAr) has been assembled at CERN. The system is based on 10 large-area photomultiplier tubes (PMT) immersed in a 1500-liter dewar filled with liquid argon and equipped with an extendible feed-through and mechanical support for an alpha source (241Am). We have built a number of test arrays made of 16 SiPMs of 3 × 3 mm$^2$ with a mixed series–parallel configuration and common bias and readout. With this technique it is possible to increase the total active area keeping low the bias voltage and readout channels. [...]

Tetraphenyl-butadiene (TPB) is an organic fluorescent chemical compound generally used as wavelength shifter thanks to its extremely high efficiency to convert ultra-violet photons into visible light. A common method to use TPB with detectors sensitive to visible light, such as photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), is to deposit thin layers on the device window. [...]

Open questions are still present in fundamental Physics and Cosmology, like the nature of Dark Matter, the matter-antimatter asymmetry and the validity of the particle interaction Standard Model. Addressing these questions requires a new generation of massive particle detectors exploring the subatomic and astrophysical worlds. [...]
