Chapter 21: Beam from Injectors: The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) Project
/ Meddahi, M (CERN) ; Rumolo, G (CERN) ; Alemany, R (CERN) ; Bartosik, H (CERN) ; Bellodi, G (CERN) ; Coupard, J (CERN) ; Damerau, H (CERN) ; Di Giovanni, G P (CERN) ; Funken, A (CERN) ; Garoby, R et al.
The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project aims at increasing the intensity and brightness in the LHC injectors in order to match the challenging requirements of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, while ensuring high availability and reliable operation of the injectors complex up to the end of the HL-LHC era. Fulfilling this goal requires extensive hardware modifications and new beam dynamics solutions across the entire LHC proton and ion injection chains: the new Linac4, the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB), the Proton Synchrotron (PS), the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), together with Linac3 and the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) as ion PS injectors. The CERN-wide coordination of the programmed stops requires a tool to centralize and collect all the activities at a macroscopic scale. It includes the activities foreseen during Long Shutdowns (LS) and Year End Technical Stops (YETS).The CERN tool named PLAN centralises all the activities foreseen by the Groups, to have a global strategic view, assessing priorities across CERN. To provide HL-LHC performance, the CERN LHC injector chain underwent a major upgrade during an almost 2-year-long shutdown. In the first half of 2021 the injectors were gradually re-started with the aim to reach at least pre-shutdown parameters for LHC as well as for fixed target beams. [...]
