Status of the MQXFB Nb$_3$Sn quadrupoles for the HL-LHC / Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Ambrosio, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Apollinari, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Barth, Christian (CERN) ; Crouvizier, Mickael Denis (CERN) ; Duarte Ramos, Delio (CERN) ; Devred, Arnaud (CERN) ; Feher, Sandor (Fermilab) ; Felice, Helene (CERN) et al.
The cold powering test of the first two prototypes of the MQXFB quadrupoles (MQXFBP1, now disassembled, and MQXFBP2), the Nb3Sn inner triplet magnets to be installed in the HL-LHC, has validated many features of the design, such as field quality and quench protection, but has found performance limitations. In fact, both magnets showed a similar phenomenology, characterized by reproducible quenches in the straight part inner layer pole turn, with absence of training and limiting the performance at 93% (MQXFBP1) and 98% (MQXFBP2) of the nominal current at 1.9 K, required for HL-LHC operation at 7 TeV. Fabrication and test of LARP technological quadrupole models of TQC series / Bossert, Rodger C (Fermilab) ; Ambrosio, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Andreev, Nikolai (Fermilab) ; Barzi, Emanuela (Fermilab) ; Chlachidze, Guram (Fermilab) ; Feher, Sandor (Fermilab) ; Kashikhin, Vladimir S (Fermilab) ; Kashikhin, Vadim V (Fermilab) ; Lamm, Michael (Fermilab) ; Nobrega, Alfred (Fermilab) et al.
In support of the development of a large-aperture Nb$_3$Sn superconducting quadrupole for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) luminosity upgrade, several two-layer technological quadrupole models of TQC series with 90 mm aperture and collar-based mechanical structure have been developed at Fermilab in collaboration with LBNL. This paper summarizes the results of fabrication and test of TQC02a, the second TQC model based on RRP Nb3Sn strand, and TQC02b, built with both MJR and RRP strand. [...]

Progress in the Development of the Nb$_3$Sn MQXFB Quadrupole for the HiLumi Upgrade of the LHC / Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Ambrosio, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Apollinari, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bourcey, Nicolas (CERN) ; Duarte Ramos, Delio (CERN) ; Ferracin, Paolo (LBL, Berkeley) ; Fiscarelli, Lucio (CERN) ; Feher, Sandor (Fermilab) et al.
The high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) requires new high field and large-aperture quadrupole magnets for the low-beta inner triplets (MQXF). With a nominal operating gradient of 132.2 T/m in a 150 mm aperture and a conductor peak field of 11.3 T, the new quadrupole magnets are based on Nb3Sn superconducting technology. [...]

Lessons learned from the prototypes of the MQXFA Low Beta Quadrupoles for HL-LHC and status of production in the US / Ambrosio, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Amm, Kathleen (BNL, NSLS) ; Anerella, Michael (BNL, NSLS) ; Apollinari, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Baldini, Maria (Fermilab) ; Blowers, Jamie (Fermilab) ; Bossert, Rodger (Fermilab) ; Carcagno, Ruben (Fermilab) ; Cheng, Daniel W (BNL, NSLS) ; Chlachidze, Guram (Fermilab) et al.
With the successful test of the first two pre-series magnets the US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project has started production of the MQXFA magnets to be used in Q1/Q3 inner triplet elements of the HL-LHC. This good start comes after the test of two prototypes with limited performance, and it demonstrates the importance of learning from past issues. [...]
