The 16 T dipole development program for FCC and HE-LHC
/ Schoerling, Daniel (CERN) ; Arbelaez, Diego (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Auchmann, Bernhard (PSI, Villigen) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Barzi, Emanuela (Fermilab) ; Bellomo, Giovanni (INFN, Milan) ; Benedikt, Michael (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) et al.
A future circular collider (FCC) with a center-of-mass energy of 100 TeV and a circumference of around 100 km, or an energy upgrade of the LHC (HE-LHC) to 27 TeV require bending magnets providing 16 T in a 50-mm aperture. Several development programs for these magnets, based on Nb$_3$Sn technology, are being pursued in Europe and in the U.S. [...]

F2D2: A block-coil short-model dipole toward FCC
/ Felice, Helene (IRFU, Saclay) ; Calvelli, Valerio (IRFU, Saclay) ; Durante, Maria (IRFU, Saclay) ; Mallon, Philip (IRFU, Saclay) ; Manil, Pierre (IRFU, Saclay) ; Millot, Jean-Francois (IRFU, Saclay) ; Minier, Gilles (IRFU, Saclay) ; Rochepault, Etienne (IRFU, Saclay) ; Bord, Alexandre (U. Lorraine) ; Perraud, Simon (IRFU, Saclay) et al.
In the framework of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) program, and in collaboration with CERN, CEA is developing a 1.5-m-long single aperture Nb$_3$Sn block dipole. The so-called FCC Flared-end Dipole Demonstrator (F2D2) will produce at least 15 T with 14% margin at 1.9 K and will be assembled in a shell-based support structure. [...]

Tests of the FRESCA2 100 mm bore Nb$_3$Sn block-coil magnet to a record field of 14.6 T
/ Willering, Gerard (CERN) ; Arnestad, Havard (CERN) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugo (CERN) ; Bortot, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Bourcey, Nicolas (CERN) ; Duda, Michal (CERN ; Cracow, INP) ; Ferracin, Paolo (CERN) ; Feuvrier, Jerome (CERN) et al.
The Nb$_3$Sn block coil dipole magnet FRESCA2 was developed within the framework of a collaboration between CEA Saclay and CERN, in the continuity of the European project EuCARD and EuCARD2. With an aperture of 100 mm and a target bore field of 13 T at 10.6 kA, the magnet is required for a new FRESCA2 cable test facility at CERN. [...]

Status of the 16 T Dipole Development Program for a Future Hadron Collider

A next step of energy increase of hadron colliders beyond the LHC requires high-field superconducting magnets capable of providing a dipolar field in the range of 16 T in a 50-mm aperture with accelerator quality. These characteristics could meet the requirements for an upgrade of the LHC to twice the present beam energy or for a 100-TeV center of mass energy future circular collider. [...]

The EuCARD2 collaboration aims at the development of a 10 kA-class superconducting, high current density cable suitable for accelerator magnets, to be tested in small coils and magnets capable to deliver 3-5 T when energized in stand-alone mode, and 15-18 T when inserted in a 12-13 T background magnet. REBCO tape, assembled in a Roebel cable, was selected as conductor. [...]
