MKP-L Impedance Mitigation and Expectations for MKP-S in the CERN-SPS / Zannini, Carlo (CERN) ; Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Beck, Mario (CERN) ; Díaz Zumel, Miguel (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Standen, Dylan (CERN) ; Trubacova, Pavlina (CERN)
Beam coupling impedance mitigation is key in preventing intensity limitations due to beam stability issues, heating and sparking. In this framework, a very good example is the optimization of the SPS kickers beam-coupling impedance for beam-induced heating mitigation. [...]

An intermittent extreme BL Lac: MWL study of 1ES 2344+514 in an enhanced state / MAGIC Collaboration
Extreme High-frequency BL~Lacs (EHBL) feature their synchrotron peak of the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) at $\nu_{\rm s} \geq $10$^{17}$\,Hz. The BL~Lac object 1ES~2344+514 was included in the EHBL family because of its impressive shift of the synchrotron peak in 1996 [...]

Transverse beam dynamics studies with high intensity LHC beams in the SPS / Carlà, Michele (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Beck, Mario (CERN) ; Carver, Lee (CERN ; U. Liverpool (main)) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Kotzian, Gerd (CERN) ; Li, Kevin (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN)
In order to reach the target beam parameters of the LHC injectors upgrade (LIU), about twice the presently operational intensity of LHC type beams has to be achieved. Although the planned upgrade of the main RF system will occur during the long shutdown, a series of measurements have been performed to assess the beam dynamics challenges with these very high intensity beams on the long SPS injection plateau. [...]

Building the impedance model of a real machine / Salvant, Benoit (CERN) ; Amorim, David (CERN ; Grenoble, INP) ; Antipov, Sergey (CERN) ; Arsenyev, Sergey (CERN) ; Beck, Mario (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Brüning, Oliver (CERN) ; Campelo, Jose Enrique (CERN) ; Carideo, Emanuela (CERN) ; Caspers, Fritz (CERN) et al.
A reliable impedance model of a particle accelerator can be built by combining the beam coupling impedances of all the components. This is a necessary step to be able to evaluate the machine performance limitations, identify the main contributors in case an impedance reduction is required, and study the interaction with other mechanisms such as optics nonlinearities, transverse damper, noise, space charge, electron cloud, beam-beam (in a collider). Studies of Horizontal Instabilities in the CERN SPS / Beck, Mario (CERN ; Rostock U.) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Carlà, Michele (CERN) ; Li, Kevin (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Schenk, Michael (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; van Rienen, Ursula (Rostock U.)
In the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU), beams with double intensity with respect to the present values will have to be successfully accelerated by the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and extracted towards the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). However, first experience running with intensity higher than the nominal LHC beam has shown that coherent instabilities in the horizontal plane may develop, becoming a potential intensity limitation for the future high intensity operation. Studies of a New Optics With Intermediate Transition Energy as Alternative for High Intensity LHC Beams in the CERN SPS / Carlà, Michele (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Beck, Mario (CERN ; U. Rostock) ; Li, Kevin (CERN) ; Schenk, Michael (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; CERN)
The LHC injector upgrade project calls for a twofold increase in intensity of the SPS proton beam. In this paper, we present studies with a new SPS optics called Q22, which has a transition energy in between the one of the operationally used Q20 and Q26 optics. [...]

Effect of the Extraction Kickers on the Beam Stability in the CERN SPS / Farricker, Aaron (CERN) ; Beck, Mario (CERN) ; Repond, Joël (CERN) ; Vollinger, Christine (CERN)
Longitudinal beam instability in the CERN SPS is a major limitation in the ability to achieve the bunch intensities required for the goals of the High-Luminosity LHC project (HL-LHC). One of the major drivers in limiting the intensity of the machine is the broadband contribution to the beam-coupling impedance due to the kicker magnets. [...]

A high bandwidth transverse feedback demonstrator system has been devised within the LARP framework in collaboration with SLAC for the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) Project. The initial system targeted the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN to combat TMCI and electron cloud instabilities induced for bunches with bunch lengths at the 100 MHz scale. [...]

In the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU), beams with about twice the intensity compared to the present values will have to be accelerated by the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and extracted towards the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Machine studies with intensity higher than the nominal LHC beam have shown that coherent instabilities in both transverse planes may develop at injection energy, potentially becoming a limitation for the future high intensity operation.
