The Cosmic Ray Energetics and Mass (CREAM) timing charge detector / Ahn, H S ; Allison, P S ; Bagliesi, M G ; Beatty, J J ; Bigongiari, G ; Boyle, P ; Childers, J T ; Conklin, N B ; Coutu, S ; DuVernois, M A et al.
The use of detectors based on plastic scintillator with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) is common in cosmic-ray experiments to differentiate particle charges. However, in the presence of a calorimeter, the standard method of pulse charge integration over a time longer than a PMT pulse is hampered by abundant albedo particles. [...]

CALOCUBE: an approach to high-granularity and homogenous calorimetry for space based detectors / Bongi, M (Florence U. ; INFN, Florence) ; Adriani, O (Florence U. ; INFN, Florence) ; Albergo, S (Catania U. ; INFN, Catania) ; Auditore, L (Messina U. ; INFN, Messina) ; Bagliesi, M G (Siena U. ; INFN, Siena) ; Berti, E (Florence U. ; INFN, Florence) ; Bigongiari, G (Siena U. ; INFN, Siena) ; Boezio, M (INFN, Trieste) ; Bonechi, L (INFN, Florence) ; Bonechi, S (Siena U. ; INFN, Siena) et al.
Future space experiments dedicated to the observation of high-energy gamma and cosmic rays will increasingly rely on a highly performing calorimetry apparatus, and their physics performance will be primarily determined by the geometrical dimensions and the energy resolution of the calorimeter deployed. Thus it is extremely important to optimize its geometrical acceptance, the granularity, and its absorption depth for the measurement of the particle energy with respect to the total mass of the apparatus which is the most important constraint for a space launch. A prototype of a Focused Internal Reflection Cherenkov, equipped with 16 arrays of NUV-SiPM, was tested at CERN SPS in March 2015 with beams of relativistic ions at 13, 19 and 30 GeV/n obtained from fragmentation of an Ar primary beam. The detector, designed to identify cosmic nuclei, features a Fused Silica radiator bar optically connected to a cylindrical mirror of the same material and an imaging focal plane of dimensions ∼4 cm×3 cm covered with a total of 1024 SiPM photosensors. Performance of the Totem Detectors at the LHC / TOTEM Collaboration
The TOTEM Experiment is designed to measure the total proton-proton cross-section with the luminosity-independent method and to study elastic and diffractive pp scattering at the LHC. To achieve optimum forward coverage for charged particles emitted by the pp collisions in the interaction point IP5, two tracking telescopes, T1 and T2, are installed on each side of the IP in the pseudorapidity region 3.1 $\le |\eta| \le $6.5, and special movable beam-pipe insertions – called Roman Pots (RP) – are placed at distances of ±147m and ±220m from IP5. (Bari Polytechnic ; Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Colaleo, A. (Bari Polytechnic ; Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) et al.
At present, part of the forward RPC muon system of the CMS detector at the CERN LHC remains uninstrumented in the high-\eta region. An international collaboration is investigating the possibility of covering the 1.6 < |\eta| < 2.4 region of the muon endcaps with large-area triple-GEM detectors. [...]

Test beam results of the GE1/1 prototype for a future upgrade of the CMS high-$\eta$ muon system / Abbaneo, D. (CERN) ; Abbrescia, M. (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Armagnaud, C. (CERN) ; Aspell, P. Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) are an interesting technology under consideration for the future upgrade of the forward region of the CMS muon system, specifically in the $1.6<| \eta |<2.4$ endcap region. With a sufficiently fine segmentation GEMs can provide precision tracking as well as fast trigger information. [...]

In view of a possible extension of the forward CMS muon detector system and future LHC luminosity upgrades, Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGDs) are an appealing technology. They can simultaneously provide precision tracking and fast trigger information, as well as sufficiently fine segmentation to cope with high particle rates in the high-eta region at LHC and its future upgrades.
